New to Field Archery
General Information
Field archery is a dynamic and engaging form of archery that takes place in natural outdoor settings, such as wooded areas, fields, and hills. Unlike traditional target archery, which involves shooting at stationary targets from a set distance, field archery challenges archers to shoot at 3D animal-shaped targets placed at varied distances and angles, often in challenging terrain. This adds an element of unpredictability and excitement to the sport.
Field archery is accessible to individuals of all ages and skill levels, promoting both recreation and competition. It emphasises skills such as distance judgment, focus, and adaptability, as archers must assess their surroundings and make quick decisions. Many archery organisations, like the National Field Archery Society (NFAS), host events that foster community and camaraderie among participants. Overall, field archery is not just about precision; it is also an opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors.
SVYF - An NFAS Archery Club
Severn Valley Yeoman Foresters are affiliated to the NFAS.
NFAS, or the National Field Archery Society, is a prominent organisation in the UK dedicated to promoting the sport of field archery. Established to cater to archers of all skill levels, NFAS focuses on the enjoyment and development of archery in a natural outdoor setting. We are one of the oldest clubs in the NFAS..
The NFAS organises competitions and events across the country, creating a vibrant community for archers. Members benefit from the society’s structured guidelines, which promote safety, fair play, and skill development. The NFAS also emphasises the importance of environmental stewardship, encouraging members to respect nature while enjoying the sport. Something that we take very seriously at SVYF and are extremely proud to look after our woodland and have regular working parties where members can get involved with general maintenance tasks around the club.
Training sessions, workshops, and competitions foster camaraderie among members, making field archery not just a sport but a social activity. We also also provides resources for beginners, ensuring that newcomers feel welcomed and supported. Overall, NFAS plays a vital role in the growth of field archery, fostering a love for the sport while promoting inclusivity and environmental consciousness. Through its efforts, NFAS continues to inspire both seasoned archers and those just starting their archery journey, making it a cornerstone of the UK’s field archery scene.
We run regular ‘have-a-go’ sessions. These offer you the opportunity to visit the club and see the surroundings and meet with one of our registered coaches who will give you the opportunity to loose some arrows in our designated practise area. These sessions normally last around 3 hours and cost £10 per person. All under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent or a shoot guardian.
If you are interested in attending a session, please register your interest below and we will contact you with details of the next session.
